Chapter Sixteen

Kitty Express Mail

Salem Jail

Salem, Massachusetts

1910

“Why didn’t you listen to me?” The officer asked, shaking his head as he walked Clay back to his cell. “Now there’s no way you’ll get out, you realize that?” The officer asked, frustrated. He unlocked Clay’s cell.

“Why do you care?” Clay asked, but not in an aggressive way. His voice was calm, sincere, and inquisitive.

“The way I’ve always seen it, caring is something you do, not something you explain,” the officer said, but then his entire demeanor changed. He looked down at his hands as if they had just committed a crime. “I have to order your hanging. I’ll lose my job if I don’t.”

“I understand,” Clay said.

“Did you hear anything from your sister?”

Clay shook his head no.

“How about the Legal Aid Society?”

Again, Clay shook his head, but he knew he’d never hear from them, seeing as he used his paper and pen to write to Meghan. He didn’t regret that choice, even if it would cost him his life.

The officer looked over his shoulder and quietly moved toward Clay. “Listen, there’s something I do for all the prisoners that are scheduled to hang. I’ll get you whatever you want for your last day. You just tell me what you want, and I’ll get it.”

Clay eyed the officer, wondering how this guy ever ended up in this position. His heart seemed too tender for prison, but then again, maybe that was the perfect heart to have in a place like this.

“I’d like a copy of the Salem Observer,” Clay said. “And a letter seal that’s in the shape of a heart. And I’ll need some sealing wax,” he says, matter-of-factly.

“Most people just ask for food and a clean shave,” the officer said, rather confused by these requests.

“Some pork and potatoes would also be nice,” Clay said. “If it’s not too much.”

“I’ll see what I can do.” The officer turned and left Clay in his dark, bricked room, which is exactly what Clay wanted. He had more important business to attend to than preparing for his supposed death tomorrow.

Meooow.

The small mew came from outside Clay’s window and derailed every thought and plan in his mind.

Meooow.

Clay ran to his window, and there below it was the little furry body of Fetch, the messenger between him and Meghan.

Fetch eyed the letter that Clay had knocked to the ground earlier and sniffed the jasmine scent that Clay knew was also somewhere out there in the woods behind the jail.

Clay looked straight out his window at those woods, wanting so badly to to call out to Meghan, who he knew was out there -- hidden by nature and anxiously awaiting his letter. They only had a matter of minutes before she had to leave; he knew this. As she explained in her first letter:

I have conspired and come up with a perfect plan for communicating. I told my father that I had dozens of errands in preparation for the Valentine’s Day Ball, so I’ll have the car all day on February 13, and I’ll also have little Fetch by my side.
